    Cakile maritima 'Sea Rocket'

    [Ex. North Yorkshire, England]

    Brassicaceae/Cruciferae: an annual herb to 40cm. Found on sandy and shingly places all around the coast. The four petaled flowers are purple (sometimes almost white), approx. 1–1.5cm wide. Blooming from June-August. The fruit are quite flat, with fleshy walls, and contain 2 seeds. The leaves are Alternate. Blade pinnately lobed–with leaflets, commonly bipinnately lobed, sparsely toothed, glabrous, fleshy, lobes quite linear, narrow. Native to coastal areas of Europe, including Britain, the Mediterranean, Baltic and Black Seas.

     

    USES:

    The leaves, stems, flower buds and immature seedpods can be eaten raw or cooked. They are rich in vitamin C, but have a very bitter taste, and are best mixed in salads with other herbs.

     


    GROWING INFORMATION:

    Sow seeds in late spring or early autumn in situ. Germination is usually rapid. Prefers a light well-drained soil and a sunny position. Plants are easily grown in a garden situation and can self-sow.
