Polygonaceae: a perennial with a woody, twisted, dark rhizome to 30-70cm. Found on uncultivated soils. Inflorescence dense, the flowers are dioicous, panicle contracted in the manner of a thyrse. blooms between May and July. The stem is erect. The basal leaves are oval-lanceolate, and wavy. Native to southern Italy, Sicily and Sardinia.
Leaves are edible when young, they have a strong sorrel taste.
Antifungal and antioxidant activities have been found Rumex thyrsoides.
Rapidly germinating, keep seed in constant moisture (but not wet) with temperatures of about +20°C [68°F]. Seeds must be covered thinly. Do not cover very small seeds, but tightly press into the earth. Keep in cooler conditions after germination occurs. Full sun on a well-drained soil.
