A perennial species to 90cm. It forms clumps of thick, dissected, softly spined leaves and, from August to September, purple-pink flowers held on erect stems. Native to the sunny slopes of central and southern Japan.

Harvested from the wild for local use as a food and medicine.

Sun in moisture retentive soil. Warm germinator.

Fantastic plant for bees and other insects.
