    Allium suaveolens

    'Fragrant Leek'

Alliaceae: a bulbous perennial to 50 cm tall. Found on damp meadows and moors. Sweet scented, soft pink blooms. The umbel is hemispherical, with 15-45 bell-shaped white flowers. Stamens are longer than the tepals, with brown anthers. Ovary is green. Blooming from August – September. The leaves are narrow and linear, forming a clump. Native to southern and central Europe, from Portugal to Ukraine.

    USES:

The bulbs and leaves can be eaten. The flowers can also be used as a garnish on salads.

When added to the diet on a regular basis they help reduce blood cholesterol levels, act as a tonic to the digestive system and tonify the circulatory system.

The juice of the plant is used as a moth repellent. The whole plant is said to repel insects and moles.

    GROWING INFORMATION:

Rapidly germinating, keep seed in constant moisture (not wet) with temperatures of about +20°C [68°F]. Seeds must be covered thinly. Do not cover very small seeds, but tightly press into the earth. Keep in cooler conditions after germination occurs. Plants prefer a sunny to light shaded position in a light well-drained soil. The bulbs should be planted fairly deeply.

    Good bee plant!
