The leaves are heart-shaped at the base; the upper ones are slightly clasping. Rare and restricted as a native to Devon, Cornwall and the Scilly Isles, and occasionally found elsewhere. Native to United Kingdom, Italy, France, Spain (including the Canary Islands) and Portugal (including the Madeira Islands). naturalised in South Africa, the United States, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Melanesia, Polynesia and the Azores.
Surface sow seeds in late spring to early summer in a cold frame. Germination usually takes place within 2 - 3 weeks. When they are large enough to handle, prick out the seedlings into individual pots and plant them out in late summer. The seed has a long viability. An easily grown plant, it succeeds in most well-drained soils, including dry ones, and prefers a sunny position.
