    Verbascum densiflorum

    'Dense-flowered Mullein'

Scrophulariaceae: a biennial or short-lived, semi-evergreen perennial to 1.2m. Found in waste places, railway embankments and similar dry sunny localities. Bright-yellow flower along erect, branching stalks. Blooming from July-August. The plant forms rosettes of leaves densely covered with greyish-yellow hairs. Native to Central Europe.

    USES:

The flowers and leaves have anodyne, antiseptic, astringent, demulcent, emollient, expectorant and vulnerary properties. An infusion is used internally in the treatment of various respiratory complaints including coughs, bronchitis, asthma and throat irritations. An infusion of the fresh or dried flowers in olive oil is used to treat earaches, sores, wounds, and boils.

    GROWING INFORMATION:

Surface sow seeds in late spring to early summer. Germination usually takes place within 2 - 3 weeks. When they are large enough to handle, prick out the seedlings into individual pots and plant them out in late summer. The seed has a long viability. Succeeds in most well-drained soils, including dry ones, preferring a sunny position, but dislikes shade and wet soils.

    Great bee plant.
