Caryophyllaceae: A sacred plant used by the shamans of the verdant river valleys of the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, it is said to have the ability to induce vivid dreams.
A beautiful plant with heavenly scented white flowers, which open at dusk and close again at dawn, relatively hardy down to -5 °C or -6 °C, so should be fine outside in mild areas, said to be short lived but I have plant four or five years old still flowering like mad.
The seeds will do best if you just lightly press the seeds into the soil, but try not to bury them as they need bright light to germinate, 25-30°C or above and keep moist and humid, watch out for greenfly and slugs as they really like the taste of this plant.
It is said that if you want to use the roots, it is best done from two-year-old plants.
