Apiaceae: a downy perennial to 70cm. found on dry, calcareous grassland. The white flowers, in loose, open umbels, blooming from June-September. The leaves are once pinnate, with oval leaflets. Native to Europe, including Britain, from Scandanavia south and east to Portugal, the Balkans and Caucasus.
An essential oil from the roots is used as a flavouring in candy and liqueurs.
The plant has diaphoretic, diuretic, resolvent, stomachic, anti-inflammatory, mildly astringent and expectorant properties.
Do not cover very small seeds, but tightly press into the earth. Seed requires a period of chilling to break dormancy. It must therefore be sown in the autumn. Easily grown in any good soil, preferring a sunny well-drained site.
