Apiaceae/Umbelliferae: a branched perennial to 1m, with hollow, ridged, hairless stems. Found in shady, grassy places. The flowers are white, in umbels 3-6cm across, blooming from June-September. The leaves are usually once pinnate, toothed and oval. Widespread but distinctly local, being most common in central England.
An essential oil from the roots is used as a flavouring in candy, and liqueurs.
The leaves have diaphoretic, diuretic, resolvent and stomachic properties.
Seed requires a period of chilling to break dormancy. It must therefore be sown in the autumn. Easily grown in any good soil, preferring rather moist conditions.
