Asclepiadaceae: A bushy perennial to 80cm. Found on stony slopes. The flowers are numerous small, and star shaped, from red brown to dark brown. Blooming from May – July. Dark green ovate pointed leaves to 8cm long. Native to Adriatic Sea and the Black Sea, especially in Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey.
The plant has diaphoretic, diuretic, emetic properties. Used in the treatment of dropsy. The juice of the plant is applied to boils and pimples.
NOTE: The plant is known to be poisonous.
These seeds germinate rapidly depending on species and origin. If germination does not occur after 3–4 weeks a cooling period of 2–4 weeks is recommended. Well drained stony soils, and full sun. plants prefer a warm sheltered site.
