    'Mustard'

    [Ex. Athens, Greece]

Brassicaceae: a woody perennial growing to 1.5m. Found on limestone rocks, rocky slopes, rocky soils. Masses of creamy-yellow flowers, in elongated heads from April-August. The leaves are glabrous, fleshy, and grey-green. Native to the Aegean area, on Kriti, Southern Greece, Peloponnese, Crete, Lefka Ori, and in Southwestern Turkey.

    USES:

The young shoots are used as a vegetable in Greece.

    GROWING INFORMATION:

Sow seeds in spring in a greenhouse. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out into their permanent positions in early summer. This plant likes a well-drained soil in full sun. it should be hardy if it is protected from the winter wet. It is closely related to the native wild cabbage Brassica oleracea ssp. Oleracea, which I have happily over wintered here for the late two winters. Plants can persist for 5-8 years once established.

Very attractive to bees and butterflies.
