Ranunculaceae: a robust rhizomatous herbaceous perennial to 1.5m in height. Found in damp meadows, ditches and fens, favouring basic soils. Branched clusters of showy, fluffy yellow flowers, in dense clusters. Blooming from June-August. The leaves are fern-like and pinnately divided 2 or 3 times into toothed lobes. A widespread species, native to temperate regions of Asia, Northern Africa and Europe.
The plant contains an alkaloid that has medical uses such as analgesic or anticancer effects.
