    'Narrowleaf Blue-eyed Grass'

    Iridaceae: an herbaceous perennial growing from rhizomes to 50cm. found in moist meadow and open woodland. The flowers are blue to 10mm across, each tipped with a sharp point, veined, and darkening toward central yellow patch. The leaves are grass-like. Native to Eastern Canada and US, west to Texas and Minnesota. Naturalised in Britain.

     

    USES:

    The root has astringent properties. An infusion is used to treat diarrhoea in adults and children. The leaves are eaten as a cooked green to regulate the bowels. An infusion of the plant has been used to treat stomach complaints and stomach worms.

     

    GROWING INFORMATION:

    These seeds should germinate rapidly in 3–4 weeks at 15-20°C. if seeds fail to germinate a cooling period of 2–4 weeks is recommended. When large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for their first winter. Prefers a moist but well-drained humus-rich loamy soil and a position in full sun, though it will tolerate part-day shade.
