    Mimulus guttatus 'Yellow Monkey Flower'

    [Ex. Co. Durham]

Scrophulariaceae: An attractive and distinctive perennial to 50cm. found growing on damp soil, typically beside streams and rivers. The flowers are 25-45mm across and showy, the corolla yellow marked with small red spots, blooming from June-September. This is an introduced species from North America, now widely naturalised in the UK. Native to Western North America - Alaska to Mexico.

    USES:

The leaves can be eaten raw or cooked, they have a slightly bitter flavour, they can be added to salads, and the leaves are used as a lettuce substitute.

The plant has astringent, poultice and vulnerary properties. A decoction of the leaves and stems has been used as an herbal steam bath for chest and back soreness. A poultice of the crushed leaves has been applied to wounds, rope burns. The plant is used in Bach flower remedies - the keywords for prescribing it are 'Fear or anxiety of a known origin'.

    GROWING INFORMATION:

Prefers rather moist places such as damp borders, margins of streams and boggy spots. Thrives in full sun so long as the soil does not dry out. Sow seeds in spring in a greenhouse and only lightly cover the seed, I simply surface sow them. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Easy.
