    Caryophyllaceae: an erect herbaceous perennial to 1m in height. Found on roadsides, in waste places, open woodlands and disturbed areas and grassland. The bright vermilion flowers in compact, domed heads 10-12cm in width. The leaves are produced in opposite pairs, simple broad lanceolate, 2–12cm long and 1–5cm broad. Native to central and eastern Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and north western China.

     
    GROWING INFORMATION:

    Surface sow seeds in spring, they need warmth and light. Grow in moist, fertile soil in sun or partial shade. May require support in windy situations. Deadhead to prolong flowering then cut down in the autumn. Attracts bees.
