Malvaceae: an upright annual, to 1.2m tall. Found in sandy areas, mainly by the sea. Large showy funnel-shaped flowers to 10cm across, pink or white, often with darker veining of the throat. Blooming from July to September. Long-stalked, palmately shallowly-lobed leaves. Native to the Mediterranean region.
The young leaves can be cooked and eaten as a vegetable.
Sow in situ in the spring. Germination should take place within a few weeks. An easily grown plant, succeeding in any ordinary garden soil. A soil that is too rich encourages foliar growth at the expense of flowers. Tolerates maritime exposure and are very ornamental.
