Caprifoliaceae: a shrub from 0.5 – 2m, with straight thin grey-brown glabrous branches. Found in mountain forests. The flowers are pinkish white, two flowered inflorescences, 2.5cm long. Blooming from April – May. The black berries are 6 – 10mm across. The leaves are glabrous, narrow, conical, pointed, 2.8cm long and 1 – 4cm wide. Native to central and southern Europe.
Young shoots have a calming effect on the nervous system. Recommended for hepatitis, bronchitis, tonsillitis, gout, edema and long-term stress.
The seed requires long cold stratification and should be sown from late summer to autumn in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Semi-shade, stony well-drained soil that does not dry out.
