Asteraceae: roughly hairy annual or biennial to 30cm, with stiff and tinged reddish. Grows in dry, grassy places and on coastal shingle and dunes. The flowers are 12-18mm across, and consists of a pale yellow floral disc and pale purple rayed florets, from a distance this combination of pale yellow and pale purple appears blue hence it common name, blooming from June-August. The leaves are spoon-shaped and stalked at the base of plant, and narrow and unstalked on stem. Widespread only in England and Wales. Native to Northern Europe to eastern Asia - China and Japan. Also found in northern America.
The leaves can be eaten if boiled, but only if your desperate.
Surface sow seeds in spring in situ. The seed usually germinates within four weeks. Prefers a moderately fertile well-drained soil in a sunny position.
