    'Sage-leaved Rockrose'

    [Alpes Maritimes 950 m., France]

Cistaceae: a bushy, evergreen shrub reaches on average 30–60cm, with red-green spreading stems. Found on garrigue and maquis habitats. The flowers are white with yellow centres, up to 50cm across., borne on long stalks, either singly or in small groups. The leaves are pale green, up to 40mm long, and are slightly hairy on both sides. Native to the Mediterranean region, in southern Europe and parts of Western Asia and North Africa.

    USES:

The dried leaves are used as an adulterant for marjoram.

This plant is an aromatic, expectorant, stimulant herb that controls bleeding and has antibiotic effects. The glandular hairs on the leaves yield the oleo-resin 'ladanum', used medicinally and in soaps, perfumery, and fumigation.

    GROWING INFORMATION:

These perennial seeds can germinate very irregularly over a long period, but the seed usually germinates in 1 - 4 weeks at 20°C. Lower temperatures of less than +5°C are very effective. Seed trays should not be discarded prematurely. Constant moisture must be maintained. Do not leave in direct sunlight.

Requires a sunny position in a dry or moist well-drained light sandy soil, can withstand drought once it is established. Plants are said to hardy to about -12°C, but they require protection in severe winters, and protection from the winter wet. Dislikes pruning or root disturbance!

The flowers are very attractive to bees.
