    Cistaceae: a shrub to 1m in height and a spread of 1.5m, with evergreen leaves and a hairy, glandular, sticky texture. Found in the Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub ecosystems of matorral and maquis shrublands. The inflorescence is generally a panicle of 2-8 flowers, each with five sepals and white petals. The leaves are linear to lance-shaped, green, wrinkly, and up to 5cm long. Native to southern Europe and northern Africa. The plant has been reported elsewhere as an introduced species, and in California as an invasive species.

     

    USES:

    The whole plant is used for medicinal use. Used in traditional medicine in the treatment of inflammatory diseases and bronchitis.

    The plant produces an oil resin, called ladanum, which is very important for cosmetic industry.

     

    GROWING INFORMATION:

    These perennial seeds germinate very irregularly over a long period. Lower temperatures of less than +5°C [41°F] are very effective. Seed trays should not be discarded prematurely. Constant moisture must be maintained. Do not leave in direct sunlight. Grow in poor to moderately fertile soil in sheltered site in full sun. Usually lime tolerant.
