Campanulaceae: an attractive delicate, hairless perennial to 40cm. Found on dry, grassy places, on both calcareous and acid soils. The flowers or 15mm long, blue and bell-shaped, nodding, on slender stalks, blooming from July-October. The leaves are round and wither when flowering.
It has a circumpolar distribution in the Northern Hemisphere, from about latitude 40° N to about 70° N, extending in Europe from the north Mediterranean to the arctic.
The leaves can be used raw or cooked. They have a mild flavour with a pleasant sweetness, it can be used as a major ingredient in salads.
The root has been chewed in the treatment of heart and lung problems. An infusion of the roots has been used as ear drops for a sore ear. And a decoction of the plant has been drunk or used as a wash in the treatment of sore eyes.
Rapidly germinating, keep seed in constant moisture (not wet) with temperatures of about +20°C [68°F]. Seeds must be covered thinly. Do not cover very small seeds, but tightly press into the earth.
