    Gentianaceae: a distinctive, upright, grey-green annual to 30cm. Found in short, calcareous grassland. The flowers are from 10-15mm across with 6-8 bright yellow petals that open only in bright sunshine, blooming June-October. The leaves are ovate and waxy. Locally common in England and wales, mainly in the south. Native to Europe, including Britain, south from Holland and Germany east to Morocco and Western Asia.

     

    USES:

    A yellow dye is obtained from the plant extract.

     

    GROWING INFORMATION:

    Surface sow seeds in early spring in seed pots in a cold frame and plant out as soon as the plants are large enough to handle. When well sited, the plant should self-sow. If you have sufficient seed, it should be possible to sow the seed in situ in the spring. succeeds in well-drained soil and full sun. It prefers calcareous soils in the wild.
