Asteraceae: A rhizomatous perennial to 70cm. Found on damp meadows and hillsides. Bright 5cm yellow flowers, petals that radiate from a large centre much like a daisy and are borne on a single stem. Blooming from June - August. Alternate leaves that are long and oval and slightly hairy. Native to North America, from New Mexico to Southern Alaska.
The whole plant has antiecchymotic, antiphlogistic, nervine, sternutatory and vulnerary properties. All parts of the plant may be used, but the flowers are used in preference to the root. They have a discutient property and a tincture is used as an external application to swellings, sprains, bruises and wounds. A salve applied to cuts helps to keep down infections.
Rapidly germinating, keep seed in constant moisture (not wet) with temperatures of about +20°C [68°F]. Seeds must be covered thinly. Do not cover very small seeds, but tightly press into the earth. Keep in cooler conditions after germination occurs. Prefers a moist, well-drained humus rich soil, preferably lime-free. Prefers a mixture of sand, loam and peat.
