Alliaceae: a vigorous bulbous plant forming a clump to 30cm. Umbels of small, fragrant, star-shaped white flowers. Blooming August – September. Garlic scent, linear, strap-shaped leaves. Native to Himalaya China.
Aromatic leaves have a garlic-like flavour. The leaves are used in Asian cookery, chopped finely like chives in various dishes. Flowers and flower buds have a delicious flavouring and pretty garnish for the autumn salad bowl.
The whole plant has antibacterial, cardiac, depurative, digestive, stimulant, stomachic and tonic properties. The leaves and the bulbs are applied to bites, cuts and wounds.
Germinates in 1 - 3 weeks warm. Prick out the seedlings into individual pots when they are large enough to handle. Plants prefer a sunny position in a rich moist but well-drained soil. Good in wet climates where garlic tends to rot.
Good bee and butterfly plant.
