    Clinopodium vulgare 'Wild Basil'

    [Ex. Hertfordshire, England]

Lamiaceae: an upright, hairy, usually unbranched perennial to 35cm. grows in dry, grassy places, mostly on chalk and limestone soils. The whole plant has a pleasant aroma. The flowers are small and pinkish purple, in whorls that have bristly purple bracts coated in woolly hairs, blooming from July-September. Locally common in Southern and Eastern England but scare or absent elsewhere. Native to most of Europe, including Britain, south and west to N. Africa, Siberia, central and western Asia.

    USES:

The edible leaves can be used fresh or dried as a flavouring in cooked foods, or fresh as a flavouring in salads. They have a sweet and aromatic taste. A nice refreshing herbal tea can be made from the fresh leaves.

The plant has aromatic, astringent, cardiotonic, carminative, diaphoretic and expectorant properties. An infusion of the plant helps to overcome weak digestion.
